Sharing the Gospel on an Airplane

Have you ever done it? Have you ever been prompted to but failed to act on it? Have you ever just read your Book of Mormon while others observed? I've done it - but I always leave the plane thinking I should have been more proactive about sharing, maybe started a conversation I wasn't planning on. I always think there's more we can do. Thoughts? Especially since as I was reading When Thou Art Converted by Elder Ballard, I read two consecutive stories about brave missionaries who shared the gospel and tears trickled down my face as I thought how cowardly of me not to say something to these people! Ugh. Maybe on the plane ride back?

I did...on my plane ride home from my mission. ;-) I was all alone on the place, no companion, sitting next to a (handsome?) man just a few years older than me. I was reading about the Word of Wisdom, and he asked me what I was reading. I explained. Shortly after, he got up to go to the back of the plane and enjoy a small bottle of liquor with the friendly and pretty stewardesses back there. (Japan to Seattle is a LOOOOOONG flight.) He came back half an hour later, kind of put out. The waitresses had commented on his 'red face' and he was upset that his drinking hadn't made a more favorable impression. "What were you reading again??"

He committed himself, then and there, to go for one month without a drop of alcohol. He exchanged e-mails with me, so he could check in afterwards.

On December 11, I received an e-mail from him. He had kept his word, it was an interesting experiment, and now...he was on his way out the door to the first Christmas party of the season, and his experiment was over. ;-)

It still makes me chuckle!

Don't worry about sharing the gospel. I mean, don't NOT share it, but don't...be afraid, is what I mean. Do what you do, and people who are interested will ask you about it. And then, be prepared to answer questions. It's a nice idea to travel with pass-along cards or an extra copy of the BoM to give away, if you have room in your bag. (With two kids, and all their GEAR, I never have room for that.)

@Kristina - email me at daisychou@gmail.com and we can get in touch with each other! I love that you can relate to the experiences I've had - it makes it all so worth it to write about.

To this day I eat myself up over the fact that I never followed up with a great contact I met on the plane. The guy had so many questions to ask about our beliefs and the plan of salvation. He really wanted to know the truth. But I never contacted him after our brief encounter on that flight. Doh! I'm still mad about it!

Hey Daisy, just saw your video on mormon.org and I thought you did an amazing job! I related so well to your thoughts when you wondered if there was more to life, like it wasn't going anywhere and it really helped me remember how much the Gospel can change that. So thank you very much and I'm sure the Lord appreciates your efforts!

I actually have been wanting to start a blog like yours for a long time, and when they mentioned having one in conference as a way to share I figured I might as well start now. I've never actually blogged before, so I was wondering if you had any advice for me...?

Thank you guys for all the kind comments! As for starting a blog Todorojo - think about what you are passionate about and how you want to share it. A lot of my buddies do more photo blogging, some do story telling, some just use it as a journal. What's neat is, your sharing of the gospel will come through all these venues so just do whatever feels right and don't be afraid to share with everyone!
